Ross Oil Junior A Football Championship

                                 Iveleary 1-11  Ballincollig 1-08

An understrenght Iveleary had reason to be worried as they lined up to start this championship first round tie against Ballincollig at Kilmurry but the team on duty succeeded in winning a game which seemed to be slipping away from them on several occasions over the hour.  Iveleary had the benefit of the strong wind in the first half and Finbarr McSweeney opened their scoring but Ballincollig were level at 0-1 each by the 6th minute.  David Hourihan then kicked Iveleary into the lead but in the 10th minute Ballincollig opened up the Iveleary defence and Alan O'Donovan belted the ball past Jamie Cronin from close range.  Cronin then had to make a good save under pressure to deny Ballincollig but a further point followed to give Ballincollig a lead of 1-2 to 0-2 by the end of the opening quarter.  In the 19th minute Ger McSweeney, the star of the Iveleary attack, pointed a free and a minute later Iveleary got the boost they needed when David Hourihan took a pass from Daniel O'Riordan and in the clear, slipped the ball wide of the Ballincollig keeper and into the corner of the net.  Seanie Lehane followed with a point, then Ger McSweeney fisted over another and Brian Cronin took a pass from Shane Galvin to add another in the 26th minute.  A late point for Ballincollig left the score at half time at 1-6 for Iveleary, 1-3 for Ballincollig. Two points for Ballincollig immediately on the restart cut the deficit to a single point and when Iveleary replied with a Ger McSweeney point, Ballincollig came back with their third point in five minutes.  In the 44th minute the sides were level when Fergal Keohane had a Ballincollig point and the advantage now lay with Ballincollig.  However Iveleary put in a tremendous last quarter.  In the 47th minute, Brian Cronin was fouled in the right corner and Ger McSweeney pointed the resultant free.  Ballincollig now missed a free and Iveleary went two clear in the 53rd minute when Ger McSweeney pointed from play.  A Ballincollig point cut the difference to a single point once again but Seanie Lehane set up David Hourihan for a 58th minute Iveleary point.  In injury time Edward Buckley was fouled in possession and Ger McSweeney pointed the free.   Scorers: D. Hourihan 1-2, G McSweeney 0-6 (0-3 frees), F McSweeney, S Lehane, B Cronin 0-1 each.

            Kilmichael   2 - 10   Aghinagh 0-8

There was a very strong and bitterly cold wind blowing from goal to goal at Carrigadrohid for this first round game and when facing the elements, both teams managed to score only one single point each.  Aghinagh had the wind to their back in the first half and kicked over seven points to lead by six at the break.  On the resumption however, Kilmichael had a much more rewarding return for their dominance, had hit the front by the 43rd minute and dominated the closing period to emerge clear winners by the final whistle.  James O'Leary was in sparkling form in the Kilmichael attack and a goal apiece from Daniel Twomey and Dermot O'Riordan left Aghinagh with problems to which they had no solution on this occasion.  In a game of two halves, Aghinagh dominated the opening 30 minutes.  Daniel Twomey pointed a Kilmichael free in the 2nd minute; they were to score no more until the second half.  Aghinagh drew level in the 3rd minute when Barry O'Leary pointed a free and went ahead when the same player took a great point from play two minutes later. Barry O'Leary then pointed frees in the 9th, 19th and 20th minutes and Declan Ambrose had points from play in the 27th, a punched effort, and 32nd minutes to give Aghinagh a 0-7 to 0-1 interval lead.  Aghinagh suffered a bad loss in the 25th minute when defender Jeremiah Kelleher had to retire with a leg injury.Five points from James O'Leary for Kilmichael had his side only a point in arrears by the 41st minute.    In the 43rd minute the Aghinagh defence did not gather a ball, Daniel Twomey pounced and got in to place the ball wide of the stranded Paul O'Sullivan in the Aghinagh goal. Kilmichael were dominant now, leading by 1-6 to 0-7 and were playing with conviction.  Cian Dromey added a point but Jeremiah Corkery almost got in for an Aghinagh goal at the other end, Shane Masters doing well to deny him.  Barry O'Leary did get a point from a free for Aghinagh but it was to be their only score of the half .  In the 50th minute Dermot O'Riordan scored a second goal for Kilmichael from close range and in the last ten minutes James O'Leary added two more points from play and Colm Dromey had another.  Scorers: Kilmichael: D Twomey 1-1, D O'Riordan 1-0, Js. O'Leary 0-7 (0-3 frees), Cian and Colm Dromey 0-1 each.  Aghinagh: B O'Leary 0-6 (0-5 frees), D Ambrose 0-2.
