Jackie O'Shea Memorial Day

April 19, 2012

Jackie O'Shea R.I.P.
1926 - 2011

n SundOay April 22nd 2012 Donoughmore Hurling and Football club will pay tribute to one of its best known and loved club members the late Jackie O' Shea. He will be recognised by the unveiling of a memorial to his memory at the club grounds Pairc Eoin Mhic Charthaigh Lackabawn at 7.30p.m. This ceremony wil be preceded by a Mid-Cork Junior Hurling League game between Donoughmore and Aghabullogue at
5.30 p.m.

Jackie aged 85 years died unexpectedly on April 20th last year and his sudden parting created a huge wave of emotion for a man that was respected and admired far beyond the boundaries of Donoughmore. For a consistent period of over 70 years he gave unselfishly his body and soul to his beloved G.A.A. club and to many clubs and organisations in the parish. The contribution he made was invaluable and incalculable and may never be equalled. Aptly known as Mr. Donoughmore his unassuming manner coupled with an innate generosity of heart endeared him to many people and he was the ideal ambassador for the parish and its community.

For many years he was Secretary of the Donoughmore Open Sports an athletic and cycling meeting that was renowned throughout the South of Ireland. An illustrious hurling goalkeeper for the club he was acknowledged to be one of the best in Mid-Cork. Over the years he acted as Vice- Chairman, Secretary, PRO, Committee Member, Fundraiser, Field Booking Officer, and latterly as Life President of the GAA
Club. Deeply involved in community life he introduced concerts, dances, carnivals, road races and other novelty events to the people that created a new wave of social activity.

His full contribution is documented in a souvenir booklet specially compiled for the occasion. This not alone gives a unique insight into Jackie but contains many personal and previously unseen images. The publication gives an opportunity to relate and relive life from the 1940's through to the 1980's and should prove to be a publication that will be treasured by his many friends, associates and the general public.

A general invitation is issued to everyone to join his family and friends in a special day of celebration on Sunday April 22nd .
