Muskerry Cup Football Final
Kilmurry 1 - 13 Iveleary 1 - 6
Beaten in the previous three Muskerry Cup finals, Kilmurry left nothing to chance at Macroom on this occasion, took the lead in the very first minute, led by 0-8 to 0-3 at the break and maintained control of matters to the finish. Iveleary, were game to the end and Ger McSweeney's goal from the penalty spot in the 48th minute had left only four points between the teams at that stage but it was Kilmurry who finished the strongest and three unanswered points gave them a deserved and comfortable winning margin. William Buckley and Dave O'Halloran combined for the latter to open the scoring with a Kilmurry point in the very first minute and Buckley added a second two minutes later. Brian Cronin had a point for Iveleary in the 6th minute to which Alan O'Sullivan gave a quick reply for Kilmurry. After a lull in scoring, Ger McSweeney pointed for Iveleary in the 15th minute, Eoin Creedon did likewise for Kilmurry and Ger McSweeney then pointed a free to leave a point between the teams at the 20 minute mark. Kilmurry finished the half strongly with four points in a row, one point each from Dave O'Halloran, Dominick Creedon (a free), Eoin Creedon and William Buckley and were quite happy at half time leading by 0-8 to 0-3 after playing well.On the restart there was an early exchange of points between Barry Murphy for Iveleary and Liam Long for Kilmurry and subsequently Ger McSweeney and Kevin Manning had Iveleary points to narrow the deficit to three points. James Kelleher did well to slip a ground ball to the Iveleary net in the 42nd minute, Dave O'Halloran added a point, and seven points now separated the teams. A foul on David Hourihan yielded a penalty for Iveleary in the 48th minute and Ger McSweeney duly slotted home to reduce the deficit but Kilmurry were unruffled and three points from William Buckley, one from a free re-established their superiority and gave them a comfortable winning margin at the finish.
